Should I get my puppy a collar or harness?
Hes an 8 week old Maltese Bichon Hybrid. Is he old enough to wear a collar or should I wait until he is a little bit older?
Maltichons are Hybrid dogs from what I read.
You should be getting him used to the collar now. For most dogs and puppies I prefer a collar. For my adult dogs I use a martingale-style collar and prefer these over a buckle collar because if they are adjusted properly a dog can't slip out of them. For growing puppies I prefer an adjustable buckle collar with a snap buckle because they are cheaper than a good martingale (so replacing them as the pup grows is cheaper) and can be removed quickly. I never leave a collar on a dog that is not attended because they could chew the collar/tags or get the collar caught on something and strangle themselves to death. The only exception for my preference for a collar is if a dog has a health condition that would make something around the neck dangerous or painful such as a collapsing trachea or a neck wound. In those cases, and only in those cases, I prefer a snuggly fitted harness.
I do not like harnesses because they ENCOURAGE pulling (ever wonder why sled dogs wear a harness? it's not just because pulling 100lbs+ with your neck would be bad, it encourages pulling) and give you far LESS control over a dog than a properly fitted collar (or better yet for large, strong dogs a properly fitted collar and head collar). The only time I have ever seen a harness discourage pulling is when the dog was TRAINED (my friend used a harness when she took her dog roller-blading, her dog learned never to pull in a harness because she only ever wore the harness rollerblading and then when she pulled my friend fell down and her dog found this quite frightening).
