For beggining guitar, steel strings or nylon strings?
Hey, I've decided I'm going to learn guitar, and I'm wondering whether I should use steel strings or nylon strings. I don't have calluses (hope that's the right spelling), and I seriously don't have any idea what is the best for starting out? The one thing I have noticed is that on steel string guitars you seem to get that squeaking sound when you move your fingers across the strings quickly. Is there a way I could get round that if I did go with steel strings? thanks
Get a steel string guitar unless you're interested in playing classical music in which case get a nylon string classical guitar.
If you're concerned about finger squeaks there's a simple solution: use Elixir strings, which are coated to all but eliminate any noise. I prefer the Nanoweb series but the Polyweb strings work well, too. All new Taylor guitars come strung with Elixirs and several other guitar manufacturers also use them. If you're a beginner, go for the light gauge strings which will be easier on your fingers. Good luck.
